Lakshadweep eases permits, boosting tourism growth.
The entry permit process for Lakshadweep has been simplified, removing the requirement for a local sponsor or prior police clearance for tourists. Under this new system, security checks are conducted by the Lakshadweep Police following the submission of the application. Travelers must still apply at least 14 days in advance, providing a detailed itinerary that includes all planned island visits and specific travel dates. Furthermore, transit at Kavaratti or Agatti is restricted to a maximum of 12 hours.
To make visiting the islands more convenient, the Union Territory of Lakshadweep has simplified its entry permit procedures for tourists. A recent circular from the island administration states that travelers are no longer required to provide a local sponsor or obtain a police clearance certificate from their home region when applying for a permit. Instead, the Lakshadweep Police will conduct the necessary security screenings once the application is received. These updates are designed to boost tourism while ensuring the region remains secure.
Visitors must submit their permit applications a minimum of 14 days before their trip. It is required that the application explicitly lists all travel dates and every island the traveler intends to visit or transit through. Access is strictly prohibited to any islands not mentioned on the issued permit. For those in transit, the available locations are restricted to Agatti or Kavaratti for a period not exceeding 12 hours. To prevent potential financial loss from cancellations, officials recommend that travelers secure their flight tickets only after the entry permit has been granted. Approval of these applications is contingent upon the applicant’s eligibility and the submission of all required documentation.
